FAIRFAX, VA – “After four years of backing down from calling out Donald Trump for what he is, it’s time that we finally get real about what’s happening here in America: yesterday, our racist, fascist President and his corrupt sycophants in Congress encouraged a violent right-wing coup attempt against our federal government.”
“While Republican members of Congress were beginning their shameful attempt to overturn the fair and undeniable results of the presidential election, supporters of them and the President began what can only be described as a siege of the Capitol building. Their goal was to disrupt the proceedings of Congress and block President-Elect Biden’s victory from being lawfully certified. This is the definition of an attempted coup; an attempted coup carried out in tandem between elected officials at the highest level and a white supremacist mob.”
“The President invited this mob to come to Washington on this day for the express reason of wreaking havoc. They were emboldened by Trump and other Republicans who played with the fire of conspiracy theories and sedition. And they were allowed to proceed with their storming of our seat of government by a police force that without any doubt would have cracked down harder and faster if the mob was Black and brown.”
“January 6th, 2021 will undoubtedly go down in American history as one of our darkest days. And although Trump’s time in office will soon be over, it’s clearer than ever before that his racist authoritarianism will continue to rear its head in America. Just as in Charlottesville here in Virginia four years ago and in Washington yesterday, Trumpism will continue to fester and our communities will continue to suffer without action.”
“We must recognize that the time for taking small steps to confront racism and authoritarianism have passed. To move past the painful Trump era, we must fight for policies that will bring about real, structural change. We can’t delude ourselves with dreams of “reaching out to” and “working with” those who look to violently uphold their place in a corrupt system. It’s clear that the only way to finally bury this scourge of evil is through aggressive and meaningful action. We need to make drastic reforms to our democracy so we can end the minority-rule that our system allows. We need to restore trust in our institutions by making them work for all people rather than only the highest bidder. We need to reimagine a criminal justice system that finally ends the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. We need to ensure economic prosperity and a high quality of life for all so nobody feels the rage of being left behind. And we need to center truth and reconciliation about what really happened under the reign of this corrupt President.
“It is time to finally be bold in fighting back. No more half measures and soundbites. Our country, our Commonwealth, our communities, and our families deserve better. We can and must continue to march forward, fighting for a stronger, fairer, and more compassionate nation.”
